African Market Observatory (AMO)

What do we do?

The African Market Observatory (AMO) monitors prices within and across countries in East and Southern Africa at different levels of supply chains and assesses other market dynamics of the workings of markets for staple foods.

Our context

Previous work done by CCRED points to lack of regional integration which hampers the region's resilience and food security.

Why does it matter?

Efficient markets can contribute to realising the potential for expanded production across the region and to adapting to the effects of climate change which is placing significant pressure on food systems and rural livelihoods.

How does the Price Tracker help?

Data is an essential element for us to evaluate if prices are fair and markets are working well for smaller producers and other market participants.

Our motivation

Our analysis supports the case for investment in infrastructure, water management, logistics and storage and support services and informs the work of institutions such as competition authorities.

Why us?

CCRED and our partners have built a strong knowledge base in areas including fertilizer, poultry and transport, which can be accessed here.
