Gigabit internet in the City of Johannesburg

Public Platform: Gigabit internet in the City of Johannesburg

12 FEBRUARY 2015

Gigabit internet access has the potential to deliver economic growth, jobs and innovation, with recent research showing that it adds as much to GDP as the initial rollout of “always on” broadband (more than 1%). Pres. Barack Obama in the USA for example recently made this a part of his platform for his remaining two years in office. This was after Google Fibre successfully rolled out Gigabit internet access in partnership with a number of City governments in the USA. Gigabit internet has recently become available to residents of Johannesburg.

The question is: how could government support the rollout of these networks? Join CCRED in partnership with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) for a panel debate among key CoJ and Gauteng provincial government decision makers, academics and private businesses already busy with the rollout of Johannesburg.

The expert panel includes; Zolani Matebeshe (City of Johannesburg), Alon Hendel (Fibrehoods), Ryan Hawthorne (CCRED) and Kwanda Ntondini (Gauteng Growth and Development Agency).

Join us afterwards for refreshments as we welcome you to our new offices and introduce CCRED’s exciting work programme for 2015.
